Carefree Car Ownership
Safety tips to keep in mind after earning your license
After years of being chauffeured around town by your parents, you've finally earned your right to climb behind the wheel. While passing your driver's license exam indicates that you're officially capable of handling the challenges of the road, getting out there on your own can still be an overwhelming experience at first. Here are some car travel tips and car safety tips on things to keep in mind after earning your license.
Buckle up
This one might seem obvious, but a surprising amount of people are killed in car crashes every year because they refused to buckle up when climbing into a car. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles states that this rule doesn't just apply to drivers - make sure any passenger who rides with you is always wearing a seat belt.
Other drivers can't read your mind
It might seem obvious to you that you're planning to cross traffic to pull into a gas station, but unless your turn signals are on, don't count on other drivers being on the same page. Whenever you're planning to make a change in your course, use blinkers to inform others so they can adjust - it will make both of your lives safer and easier.
Put the cell phone down
When you're behind the wheel, there's no need to multitask with your cell phone. If you need to make a call, get off the road to talk. Driving while using a cell phone is illegal in many states, and you won't get any sympathy if you're involved in a texting-related collision.
