How to stay safe when changing a tire on the road
While it may seem simple enough, changing a flat tire can actually be difficult if you've never done it before. This situation is compounded when you're struggling to remove a flat on the side of a busy road or highway. Here are some car travel tips and car safety tips for avoiding harm when changing a tire.
Pull entirely off the road
To ensure that you're out of the way of traffic, pull your vehicle off the road the second you feel the tire burst. Pull into a roadside parking lot if you can, otherwise park your car on the shoulder.
Never get under the car
As you're jacking up your car and preparing to remove the wheel, you may encounter some trouble. If you can't fix the problem easily, America Online advises never to climb under the vehicle for a better look. Should the jack fail for some reason, you don't want an extremely heavy vehicle to come down on top of you.
Safety cones
Make sure your car is easy to see for drivers who are passing by so they can give you enough room to work - this is especially important after the sun goes down. Keep some reflective orange safety cones in your trunk to place around your vehicle for increased visibility.
